My first brush with the alluring Dual-Enrollment program was actually by mistake. I was sitting in class when I heard a fellow classmate share with our teacher that they would not be returning to school the following year.
Out of my own curiosity I began to listen in to the conversation and to my surprise I found out that they would be attending college next year.
Now I've heard of this Dual Enrollment program, but I had never encountered one of its students before.
Something about the fact that they would be attending college while I was wasting away in a high school classroom stuck with me and I couldn't shake the feeling that I had to learn more about it.
So spur the moment, as usual with me, I decided that I would spend my next day checking out exactly what this program had to offer.
Instead of going to school I went to the nearest college and began asking questions about the program, "Is there still time to apply?", "What are the requirements?", "Will I still graduate high school with all of the necessary credits?".
To my utmost pleasure all of my questions were answered and then some. The admissions counselor told me there was still time to apply and sent me on my way with an application and an unshakable feeling that this was about to turn my life around in the best way possible.
The next few weeks that followed were full of important documents being turned in before the deadlines, as well as assuring that I would no longer be attending my (as of then) current high school. As sad as it was that I would be leaving all my memories and friends behind I knew that there were greater things in store for me that would make it easier to leave my old school.
Applying to the college to enter into the dual-enrollment program was a lengthy process that required several visits to the campus as well as many signatures and e-mails, however it was all worth it.
